Can the webservice of Exact Globe Next be accessed over the Internet?

Exact only guarantees and supports accessing the Entity service from within the same local network. While it is possible to reconfigure your Globe installation to make the service accessible over the Internet or from another network segment, no support can be provided on such a configuration.

In its default configuration, the Entity service of Exact Globe Next is set up exclusively for access over the local intranet that its host is on. This means that without additional configuration, any client accessing the webservice will need to either be physically connected to this intranet, have a VPN connection to this network running, or needs to pass through a custom webservice that itself has direct access to the local intranet.

It is possible to set up the Globe webservices to be directly accessible over the Internet, but this requires extensive configuration. This configuration is needed to solve some authentication and activation issues that may arise from direct webservice calls from outside the network when using NTLM authentication.

It is necessary to set up a forwarding proxy that maps an external (internet accessible) address to the internal (intranet based) address of the webservice. Instructions for this, as well as on how to set up IIS to use your SSL certificate for the webservice are contained in document 27.434.927. Please note that these instructions are provided as is and Exact does not provide support in setting this up.

When exposing the webservice over the Internet, it is also recommended to reconfigure the webservice to use SSL to encrypt all data exchange between the client and the service. Without this, all traffic between the client and the service will use plain HTTP, which is not secure outside of a controlled intranet.

The webservice of Globe does not by itself support SSL. This can be facilitated however by the proxy mentioned above, although this may require the use of 3rd party software.

While it is possible to use a self signed certificate with the webservice, it is strongly recommended that you request a properly verified certificate signed by a known and trusted certification authority.
