Preparing to install SQL Server

Introduction

It is recommended that the user checks to ensure the prerequisites are met before proceed to Upgrade and Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

Description

Upgrading to SQL Server 2005
  • Before upgrading to SQL Server 2005, it is recommended that you run the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Upgrade Advisor. For more information, see "Using Upgrade Advisor to Prepare for Upgrades" in the SQL Server 2005 Setup documentation.
  • Be sure the computer meets the system requirements for SQL Server 2005. For more information, see SQL 2005 System Requirements. Review Security Considerations for a SQL Server Installation. For more information, please refer to the topics "Security Considerations for a SQL Server Installation" in SQL Server 2005 Setup documentation.
  • Back up ALL SQL Server databases from the instance to be upgraded, so you can completely restore them.
  • Run the appropriate Database Console Commands (DBCC) on databases to be upgraded to ensure they are in a consistent state.
  • Ensure that existing SQL Server system databases - master, model, msdb, and tempdb - are configured to autogrow, and ensure that they have adequate hard disk space.
  • Ensure that all database servers have logon information in the master database. This is important for restoring a database, as system logon information resides in master.
  • Disable all startup stored procedures, as the upgrade process will stop and start services on the SQL Server instance being upgraded. Stored procedures processed at startup time may block the upgrade process.
  • Stop Replication and make sure that the replication log is empty.
  • Quit all applications, including all services with SQL Server dependencies. Upgrade may fail if local applications are connected to the instance being upgraded.
Preparing to install SQL Server 2005
  • Be sure the computer meets the system requirements for SQL Server 2005. For more information, see SQL 2005 System Requirements
  • Review Security Considerations for a SQL Server Installation. For more information, please refer to the topics "Security Considerations for a SQL Server Installation" in SQL Server 2005 Setup documentation.
  • Make sure you have administrator permissions on the computer where SQL Server will be installed. If you install SQL Server from a remote share, you must use a domain account that has read and execute permissions on the remote share. To create a failover cluster, you must be a local administrator with permissions to logon as a service, and to act as part of the operating system on all nodes of the virtual server.
  • Back up your current installation of SQL Server if you are running an instance of SQL Server on the computer where SQL Server 2005 is to be installed.
  • Verify that the disk where SQL Server will be installed is uncompressed. If you attempt to install SQL Server to a compressed drive, Setup will fail.
  • Exit antivirus software while installing SQL Server.
  • Stop all services that depend on SQL Server, including any service using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), such as Internet Information Services (IIS). Exit Event Viewer and registry editors (Regedit.exe or Regedt32.exe)
