How can I check the version and edition of my MS SQL Server?

You can check this as follows:

  • On the system where Microsoft SQL Server is installed: Go to Start ? All Programs ? Microsoft SQL Server XXXX ? Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio. From Windows 8: Press the Windows key and the Q key on your keyboard. On the right at Search at the Apps field, type “SQL Server Management Studio”. Next, click Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
  • Connect to the SQL Server.
  • On the left the Object Explorer is displayed.
  • Right click the SQL Server name and select Properties.
  • At Product you can see which edition of Microsoft SQL Server is used. In the example above this is the Express edition. At Version you can see the version of the SQL Server. For more information, see Which SQL version number belongs to which SQL Server release?
