Updating Exact MAX 5.0/5.5
This information is intended for Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 users who install or update Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 software. Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 "Supervisors" are those Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 users with Supervisor level user security rights to System Manager.
Exact MAX 5.5 updates install directly on the Exact MAX 5.5 server and "push" to the client workstations when the Exact MAX 5.5 supervisor triggers the auto-update feature. Exact MAX 5.5 provides for better management of updates by automatically installing a test environment. Exact MAX 5.5 Supervisors first download each new release, updating their RMTestServer (automatically installed test environment) and testing from their own workstation before updating their RMServer (live environment) and auto-updating other clients.
Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 Supervisor Overview
Isolate your test system while Exact MAX 5.5 users continue using "Live" data on the Exact MAX 5.5 production server.
- Download the MAX Batch5.5.X-nnnn.exe from the Exact support web site to a temporary folder on any network workstation.
- If you have not already done so, request the password required to unzip the batch file.
- Extract all files in the MAX Batch5.5.X-nnnn.exe to the \Exact\RMTestServer folder on the Exact MAX 5.0 server.
- Login to your Exact MAX 5.5 Workstation as MANAGER.
- Open System Manager > Help > Batch Information.
- In the Release Information dialog box, check the Test Server Update Option and logout.
- Log back into Exact MAX 5.5 as MANAGER and select the MAX test company you wish to use to test the update.
- Test your company's usual workflows.
Note: Extracting the files in step 2 "stages" the new release in <RM Server>\\Net\Updates using a folder structure built into the zip file.
Releases that contain updates to the Exact MAX 5.5 database will display a message at login. ONLY Exact MAX 5.5 Supervisors can run database updates using a workstation with SQL Server or SQL Client Tools installed. We recommend that Exact MAX 5.5 Supervisors test such releases by updating a sample database first. Auto-update all client workstations only after validating that the release works properly.
Result: New software installed and release number increased on the RMTestServer (test environment). New software installed on client after client login and auto-updates process completes. An Exact MAX 5.5 Supervisor must log in to each company database individually and update THAT company database with any Exact MAX 5.5 Database changes provided by Exact Software.
Supervisor has the option to update the Test Server Environment without affecting the live environment; allowing other users to continue their work while testing is completed.
Update your Production (Live) Server with each new Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 release:
- If you have not already done so, request the password required to unzip the batch file.
- Extract all files in the MAX Batchnnn_nnn.exe to the \Exact\RMServer folder on the Exact MAX 5.0 Server.
Note: Extracting the files in step 1 "stages" the new release on the Production Server in <RM Server>\\Net\Updates using a folder structure built into the zip file.
- Login to Exact MAX 5.5 Supervisor's workstation as MANAGER.
- Open System Manager > Help > Batch Information.
- In the Release Information dialog box, check the Production Server Update Option and logout.
Result: New software installed and release number increased on the Production Server (live environment). New software installed on the clients after client login and auto-updates process completes. Database changes (if included) completed on each company after supervisor logins into the company.
Exact MAX 5.0/5.5 User Overview
An updated Exact MAX 5.5 server displays an update message during any user login to a client workstation not yet updated. If that user selects Yes to update, a new Exact MAX 5.5 software release installs on that workstation automatically and the release number on that client workstation increases to match the server release number. If the user selects No, the new software release does not install.
See Exact MAX 5.5 System Manager > Help > Batch Information > F1 for more information.
