Server hardware and software recommendations for Exact Globe Next

In this document, you will find additional hardware and software requirements for a SQL Server used with Exact Globe. This document can help you selecting the appropriate hardware and software for optimal performance.

System recommendations based on database size

Database size in GB Memory RAM for SQL Server Processor
< 1 GB 1 GB 1 core
1 GB - 25 GB 4 GB - 8 GB 4 cores (server processor)
25 GB - 50 GB 8 GB - 12 GB 4 - 8 cores (server processor)
50 GB - 100 GB 16 GB - 24 GB 4 - 8 cores (server processor)
100 GB - 250 GB 32 GB - 64 GB 8 - 16 cores (server processor)
250 GB - 500 GB 64 GB - 128 GB 12 - 16 cores (server processor)
500 GB - 1 TB 96 GB - 128 GB 12 - 16 cores (server processor)
1 TB + 128 GB + 16 - 24 cores (server processor)

Important notes

  • For good performance, we advice to use Solid State Disks (SSD)
  • When using a SATA based interface, Exact recommends using a hardware RAID system.
  • Disks which contain Exact SQL databases, should be formatted in 64k block size.
  • When virtualizing Microsoft SQL Server on a Storage Area Network, see document 21.603.931.
  • Make sure the server hardware is scalable.
  • Exact advises a dedicated database server (SQL Server) and disk system for the Exact databases to guarantee optimal performance.
  • Server processors are Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron and AMD EPYC.
  • We advice to implement the recommendations from the Exact System Information Tool.

Disk system information

When using a SATA based interface, Exact advises the use of a hardware RAID system (Redundant Array of Independent Disks). In a RAID system, multiple hard disks are used for sharing and replicating data over all disks. Depending on the selected RAID system, the data integrity and the performance will increase compared to using one disk. The purpose of fault tolerance is the most important. With this, data can be rebuild if one of the disks crashes.

Exact Globe in general will perform better in combination with RAID 5 or RAID 10, since most actions in Exact Globe Next relate to reading data. For the best disk performance, Exact recommends to use Solid State Disks (SSD) instead of conventional disks.

Feature Single Disk RAID 0 RAID 1 RAID 5 RAID 10
Minimum number of disks 1 2 2 3 4
Fault Tolerance No No Yes Yes Yes
Advantages Cheap Fast Read & Write Fast Read & Write Faster Read Faster Read & Write
Disadvantages Slow in a disk intensive environment No Fault Tolerance Only 50% disk space available Consumes 1 free disk Most expensive, only 50% disk space available
Recommendation Single user Not recommended Single user or SME SME SME or large enterprises
